### What Is ADHD?
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a brain-based condition that affects focus, impulse control, and activity levels. While often first diagnosed in childhood, ADHD frequently continues into adolescence and adulthood—though it may look different at each stage of life.
ADHD is not a sign of laziness or lack of intelligence. It’s a neurodevelopmental difference that, with the right support, can be managed effectively to unlock a person’s strengths and improve their quality of life.
## DSM-5 Diagnostic Criteria
The DSM-5 outlines three types of ADHD:
1. Inattentive Type
2. Hyperactive-Impulsive Type
3. Combined Type
### Core Symptoms (must persist for at least 6 months):
#### Inattention
§ Struggles to focus, follow instructions, or stay organized
§ Frequently forgets things or loses items
§ Avoids tasks requiring sustained effort
§ Easily distracted
#### Hyperactivity and Impulsivity
§ Fidgets, taps, or can’t stay seated
§ Talks excessively or interrupts
§ Has trouble waiting turns
§ Acts without thinking
Symptoms must:
§ Begin before age 12 (for diagnosis in children)
§ Appear in **two or more settings** (e.g., home, school, work)
§ Cause significant impairment in daily life
## ADHD in Children vs. Adults
### In Children:
Children with ADHD may be labeled as "daydreamers," "disruptive," or "unfocused." They might struggle with classroom behavior, social skills, or completing homework.
Signs to watch for:
* Excessive talking or interrupting
* Difficulty sitting still
* Trouble with instructions or routines
* Emotional outbursts or frustration
### In Adults:
Adult ADHD often manifests in more subtle ways—like disorganization, procrastination, poor time management, or difficulty with follow-through.
Common signs:
* Chronic lateness or forgetfulness
* Difficulty focusing during conversations or meetings
* Impulsive spending or decision-making
* Trouble prioritizing or completing tasks
Adults may also experience co-occurring anxiety, depression, or relationship challenges related to undiagnosed or untreated ADHD.
## Treatment & Support for All Ages
### 1. Therapy & Coaching
For Children:
* Behavior therapy and parent training
* Social skills groups
* School accommodations (IEPs and 504 Plans)
* **For Adults:**
* Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for ADHD
* Executive function coaching
* Mindfulness and emotional regulation tools
### 2. **Medication**
Stimulants: (e.g., Adderall, Ritalin, Vyvanse) are often first-line
Non-stimulants: (e.g., Strattera, Intuniv) can also be effective
* Medications are tailored based on age, symptoms, and any co-existing conditions
### 3. Lifestyle Strategies
* Consistent routines and visual reminders
* Task breakdown and time-blocking
* Sleep hygiene and exercise
* Nutrition and screen time balance
